Tropical Storm Fay is the earliest sixth Atlantic named storm formation on record

A tropical storm warning was in affect from Cape May, New Jersey, to Watch Hill, Rhode Island, on July 10 as Tropical Storm Fay moved closer to land. Forecasters said the warning area includes New York’s Long Island and the Long Island Sound. Fay was expected to bring up to 4 inches of rain, with flash flooding possible in parts of the mid-Atlantic and southern New England.

The National Hurricane Center said the storm slightly picked up speed early in the morning and was moving north at around 10 mph with top sustained winds of 50 mph. Triple-I non-resident scholar Dr. Phil Klotzbach, a Colorado State University research scientist, tweeted that Fay is the earliest sixth Atlantic named storm formation on record.
